I have a cool game on my Nokia

A short adventure game made with bitsy for the Nokia 3310 JAM 6
Use, arrows, WASD, or swipe (on mobile) to move, interact, or go forward in “cinematics”.

Sharing a game

A friend of mine is so obsessed with the Metal Gear Solid series that he invited me at his place to play them. I played all the Metal Gear Solid games at his place.

He like them that much that he played all of them at least three times each. The first time he played them “easy mode”, to enjoy the plot, than, he played  them again harder and harder to unlock the max difficult level, finally again to gain all the badges and the 100% of secrets.

I played them only once, at his place. He saw me playing because he liked it so much, even if I was not good. For him was like re-watching his favorite movie. Defenly he thought i was not good enough for his standards. When I got stuck he told me what to do, but most time he told me what to do  immediately, because seeing me try to understand what to do was too much stressing for him.

We spent several evenings that way.

It has been a lot of fun.

The jam

I owned for several years a Nokia 3310, even when there were more modern mobile phones and it was not anymore a trend. I was a bit obsessed with the one-bit Nokia screens. Later I also had a phone with cam, but when I broke it, I bought an old 1 bit Nokia (was similar to a 3310, but not exactly a 3310 because i couldn't find one) when most people were already buying iPhones.

So, I really wanted to try and make a game for that Jam, even if the only tool I can use is Bitsy.

When I was a kid, games were not used to tell everything. Sometime the introduction, the story, or the instruction were printed on paper. Maybe those paper got lost in time, so you could receive a game without backgrond or instructions, and you needed to invent, discover or, better, find someone that could tell you by voice.

Without the internet, was common to talk with friends and help each other with a game. When someone understands something they share with all friends how to beat the level.

So the game is an adventure game played on a Nokia 3310. The game does not explain itself what you have to do, but you are playing it with a friend that gives you advice and, if you don’t follow the advice, they can make fun of you, or even get angry.

I tried my best to follow sound limitation. One sound at a time and only one instrument (the most resembling an old Nokia I had in Bitsy). Twice i needed to add also a bass sound. If you ever had that phone you will never forget it’s noisy vibration. Some time even louder than the ringtone.

Hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed drawing it!

P.S.

I made this game entirely on my mobile phone. Using the friendly music composer to recreate the original Nokia Tune, I remembered how was not intuitive the music composer on the Nokia 3310. Also I didn't have headphones at the time, so I could never do it on the subway train as I did now.

Freeze

I’m sorry for not including the theme in the game.  Even if I didn't get the chance to have the theme in the game I made two themed bonus artworks (not referring to any game frame):

Wow!

This is incredible, honestly. Beautiful artwork, interesting little puzzles, some great humour. Even just the turning of the phone is so simple, yet so clever.

Great work!
